When ordering uniforms for the team, the matter of getting the right size is crucial to a successful season. No one wants to play a season in a uniform that is too tight or too baggy. Our uniform sizing guide is here to help make this process easier.
Tips
- Explain to players/parents of players the proper way to measure. Sizing for uniforms is not the same as simply matching the medium or large a player wears in everyday clothes. Since uniforms are based on more precise measurements of certain areas such as shoulders, chest, and arm length, it is important to perform actual measurement rather than going based on the size they wear in regular clothes. Show players or parents the right way to measure using a tape measurer to ensure a proper fit.
- Have players make the measurements in front of you so you can verify the information. It isn’t always ideal to have the player do the measurements at home. If you can perform the measurements yourself or have the player perform them in front of you so you can double-check for accuracy, this will ensure the measurements are correct before you order.
- Keep in mind that uniform sizes may vary. It is important to note that no two bodies are identical and therefore some uniforms may have a different fit between two players. The goal is to find the most comfortable fit for that individual, whether that means going up or down a size to accommodate certain areas. For example, one player may have thicker arms and need a larger size jersey on account of that factor.
- Know the difference between youth and adult when ordering. You should always keep in mind that the size of most measurements will tell you if the uniform should be youth or adult size. For example, a men’s chest measurement of 28 inches will be a youth size small whereas a measurement of 40 inches would be an adult’s size small.
How to Measure
-
Bust (women) or chest (men): Keep arms hanging down but away from torso and measure at the fullest part of the chest.
-
Shoulder width: Keep arm extended and measure from the tip of the shoulder and arm to the base of the back of the neck. Repeat on the opposite side as well.
-
Arm length: With the arm outstretched to the side and in a straight line, measure from the end of the clavicle to the fold of the wrist closest to the palm.
-
Waist: Measure at the narrowest part of the waist so the tape intersects the navel. The tape should be kept flat but loose, so the waist isn’t too tight.
-
Jersey Length: Starting at the base of the back of the neck, measure to the tailbone to give enough length to tuck the shirt in.
-
Hips: Standing with heels together, measure the fullest part of the hips by keeping the measuring tape parallel to the floor to keep things level.
-
Inseam: Start the tape measurer at the inside of the leg at the crotch seam and then measure down to the desired length by the foot. Make sure this is done with the player wearing the shoes they will wear during the game to get the right measurement.
-
Neck: This will matter more for male athletes than female athletes but should still be taken into consideration just in case. This measurement should be done by the collar of a shirt that fits around the neck in a way that is comfortable to the player. Measure from the front of the collar all the way around until the tape meets the starting point.
-
Sleeve Length: Keep the arms relaxed at the side and measure from the center of the back of the neck, down over the shoulder, and then all the way to the wrist where the sleeve should end.
-
Pant Length: Many people confuse pant length with inseam, but they are two different things. The inseam is from the crotch to ankle whereas the pant length is from the waist to ankle. Measure from the waist where the pants should start down to the ankle.
